What Is Narcolepsy?
Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological sleep disorder that affects the brain’s ability to regulate sleep–wake cycles. The most common symptom is excessive daytime sleepiness, often accompanied by sudden and uncontrollable sleep attacks—even after a full night’s sleep. These episodes can interfere with daily activities, work performance, and safety. At El Paso Sleep Center, specialized testing helps identify narcolepsy and guide effective symptom management.
Narcolepsy may also involve disruptions in REM sleep and is often associated with long-term sleep challenges that require ongoing care. A comprehensive sleep evaluation allows specialists to confirm the diagnosis, rule out other sleep disorders, and develop an individualized treatment plan.
How Narcolepsy Is Diagnosed
Narcolepsy is diagnosed by a sleep specialist using accredited sleep testing and clinical evaluation. Diagnostic tools may include overnight polysomnography to assess sleep quality and rule out conditions like sleep apnea, followed by a Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) to measure how quickly you fall asleep during the day.
Early and accurate diagnosis allows for effective symptom control and a significantly improved quality of life. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, a personalized management plan can be developed to address each patient’s specific needs. With proper medical guidance, ongoing monitoring, and appropriate treatment strategies, many individuals with narcolepsy are able to manage symptoms effectively.
